About the Galaxy Watch 5
Released August 2022 from $279, and the quiet upgrade. Samsung swapped Gorilla Glass for sapphire crystal, raised the batteries to 284mAh and 410mAh, and toughened the rating from MIL-STD-810G to 810H. It looks like a Watch 4 and is meaningfully more durable than one.
Its real first was the infrared skin temperature sensor. Samsung shipped the hardware dormant and only switched it on in April 2023, for menstrual cycle tracking using the Natural Cycles algorithm. Four years later this is the oldest Samsung watch still receiving security updates: the Watch 4 dropped off Samsung's list in September 2026 and the Watch 5 is still on it, which makes it the cheapest supported Galaxy Watch you can buy.

Cycle tracking is the one feature worth naming. The sensor reads on the watch, but the tracking itself runs in Samsung Health on an Android phone, so that specific feature does not follow you to an iPhone.
